The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to prevent the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that tramples on voting rights and mocks the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan required public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
