Pat Cummins Poised for a Key Part in the Ashes

Test match action

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Western Australia.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
