Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights disrupting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments sent during the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
