A recent study suggests that people who stop using popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these medications must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a return to starting mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting typically see a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal might result in the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and you become extremely hungry," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on integrated behavioural changes.
