A minimum of 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this accident,” stated the head of state.

The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions

The building of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable expansion of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were built at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled significant concerns over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the president maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
